Trump Claims Credit as Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Halt Deadly Border War
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to halt weeks of intense border fighting in Southeast Asia after signing a ceasefire agreement on December 27 — a deal both sides hope will end one of the deadliest eruptions in their decades-long territorial dispute. The pause matters now because it follows renewed clashes that killed at least 101 people and displaced more than half a million civilians earlier this month.
The conflict had flared in early December after a previous ceasefire brokered this year collapsed, with artillery exchanges, airstrikes and rocket fire along the 817-km disputed boundary. Thousands of residents on both sides were forced from their homes amid the violence.
According to Reuters and AP coverage, Cambodia’s Defense Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand’s Defense Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit signed the new ceasefire at a border checkpoint. The accord calls for an immediate halt to offensive operations, maintaining current troop positions, and abstaining from airspace violations, and includes a 72-hour observation period after which Thai authorities would release 18 Cambodian detainees.

Despite the signing, questions remain about the deal’s durability. Fighting had resumed after earlier truces, and both sides have previously accused one another of breaching terms even during peace talks. China and ASEAN officials are now engaged in talks to help rebuild trust and monitor the agreement.
Donald Trump publicly touted the U.S. role in encouraging the ceasefire and urged the United Nations to take a more active role in world peace.
Diplomats say the next 72 hours will be critical to determine if this ceasefire can hold and create conditions for longer-term negotiations. Follow-up meetings with foreign ministers and regional partners are expected to take place this week as leaders seek to solidify the fragile peace.

Go ahead and slap the Trump label on that tap water or any other cheap product. He has a much to do with any peace deal as creating tap water -- people are foolish enough to buy what he sells.
