Trump Claims U.S. Elections Are “Rigged,” Demands Nationwide Voter ID
Donald Trump renewed his claims of widespread election fraud on Saturday, calling the 2020 presidential election “the granddaddy of them all” and demanding nationwide voter identification requirements.
In a post shared on social media, Trump asserted that “rigged elections are common in the U.S.” and again promoted stricter voting laws, despite courts, state officials, and federal agencies repeatedly finding no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
Trump’s remarks amplified Republican efforts to advance the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation passed by the House in April 2025 on a narrow 220–208 vote. The bill would require individuals registering to vote in federal elections to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate.
House Republicans are now signaling openness to adding nationwide photo voter ID requirements to the bill in an effort to push it through the Senate, where it currently faces a 60-vote filibuster threshold.

Supporters of the SAVE Act argue the measures are necessary to protect election integrity. Polls consistently show broad public support for voter ID requirements, with roughly 80% of Americans favoring some form of identification to vote.
Democrats and voting-rights advocates, however, warn the legislation could disenfranchise eligible voters, particularly low-income citizens, the elderly, rural residents, and people who lack ready access to government documents. They argue voter fraud in federal elections is exceedingly rare and accuse Republicans of using election security rhetoric to justify restrictive voting laws.
The renewed push comes as Republicans continue to debate changes to Senate rules, including whether to weaken or eliminate the filibuster to advance election-related legislation.
Trump remains the Republican Party’s most influential figure and continues to shape GOP messaging around election integrity as the 2026 midterms approach.
