Trump DOJ Faces Lawsuit Over “Millions” of Voter Records Collected From States
Civil rights groups are suing the Justice Department, accusing it of illegally trying to access state voter data as part of a broader federal push on election rolls.
According to Reuters, organizations including the ACLU filed the lawsuit in Washington, arguing the DOJ is collecting sensitive voter information without proper authority. The complaint claims millions of records have already been gathered, including driver’s license data and partial Social Security numbers.
The DOJ says the effort is meant to identify ineligible voters like non-citizens or deceased individuals. But critics point out the department has not presented evidence of fraudulent votes tied to those findings.

Tension has escalated after the DOJ sued about 30 states and Washington, D.C., to force compliance. Courts have repeatedly rejected those attempts, with one judge calling the request “unprecedented.”
The lawsuit now seeks to block further data collection, raising new questions about federal power over state-run elections ahead of upcoming national contests.
