Trump Downplays $3.60 Gas Surge, Says U.S. “Makes Money” From Iran War Oil Spike
President Donald Trump is dismissing concerns about rising gas prices as the war with Iran drives global oil markets higher.
The comments come as U.S. drivers are seeing some of the fastest increases at the pump in years, turning fuel costs into a new political flashpoint.
In a Truth Social post Wednesday, Trump wrote that higher oil prices benefit the United States because it produces more oil than any other country. Gas prices have climbed to around $3.60 per gallon after crude oil surged above $100 a barrel during the conflict, according to multiple reports.
The price spike is tied to disruptions across Middle Eastern energy infrastructure and instability around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Analysts say the war has pushed global supply fears sharply higher, rippling through gasoline prices across the U.S.
“The United States is the largest oil producer in the world, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The remarks have triggered backlash from critics who say the administration is minimizing the financial pressure on consumers already dealing with higher living costs.
Polling suggests the issue may carry political risk. A Morning Consult flash poll shared with Axios found that 48% of Americans now blame Trump and his administration for the rising fuel prices.
The White House has argued the price spike is temporary and tied directly to wartime supply disruptions, saying costs could fall once the conflict stabilizes.
For now, however, the war’s economic impact is expanding beyond the battlefield and into American wallets.
And with control of Congress on the line in upcoming midterm elections, the politics of gas prices may become just as consequential as the conflict itself.
