Trump Energy Chief Reverses Course, Warns Gas Could Stay Above $3 for Years
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is now signaling that gas prices may not drop below $3 per gallon for years, raising new concerns as costs remain elevated nationwide.
The shift comes as average prices hover above $4, with mounting pressure on the Trump administration over earlier promises of rapid relief.
According to Reuters and The Guardian, Wright said it could take until 2027 before prices fall under $3, citing ongoing global instability tied to the Iran conflict and disrupted oil flows.
That timeline marks a notable change from March, when Wright suggested price spikes would last only weeks and decline quickly.

“I don’t know,” Wright said when pressed on when Americans could expect gas under $3 again, speaking on CNN.
The uncertainty underscores how geopolitical tensions are reshaping domestic energy costs, with disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continuing to strain supply and keep prices elevated.
It also adds political risk as rising fuel costs weigh on household budgets and challenge prior campaign promises centered on lowering energy prices.
For now, officials point to potential declines if the conflict stabilizes, but the timeline remains fluid.
Relief may come but not as soon as many expected.
