Trump Escalates Pressure as US Boards Sanctioned Oil Tanker at Sea
U.S. forces boarded a sanctioned oil tanker tied to Iran overnight, but the timing is raising new tensions.
According to the Pentagon, the vessel M/T Tifani was intercepted in international waters and boarded “without incident” as part of a wider crackdown on Iranian oil networks.
The move comes just as a fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is nearing expiration, with President Donald Trump signaling he may not extend it.

Officials say the tanker was previously flagged for smuggling Iranian crude and was considered “stateless,” allowing U.S. forces to board it under maritime enforcement rules.
But Iran has pushed back, calling similar seizures illegal and warning of retaliation, while legal experts remain split on whether these actions comply with international law.
With more ships already intercepted and talks uncertain, the operation signals a widening maritime front in the U.S.–Iran conflict.
