Trump Escalation Fuels $4 Gas as Used EV Demand Jumps Across the US
Gas prices are rising fast across the U.S., and used EV demand is rising with them as the Iran conflict drives new pressure into crude markets. That matters now because shoppers appear to be reacting in real time at dealerships, not just in surveys.
The tension is straightforward: drivers are being squeezed at the pump, while the political and military backdrop remains unstable. Reuters reported Trump’s latest comments about hitting Iran harder pushed oil higher, adding to fears of even steeper fuel costs.
AP reported the national average for U.S. gasoline moved above $4 a gallon, the highest since 2022. Wired reported that dealers selling used EVs are already seeing more shoppers, with Cox Automotive data showing used EV sales rose 12% year over year in Q1 2026 to 93,500 units.
The complication is that new EV demand has been less consistent, and a gas-price shock does not automatically create a lasting transition. Wired reported that the used market is benefiting partly because prices have come down, with used EVs now averaging about $34,800, much closer to gas-powered competitors.
“This is all very gas-price dependent,” Ivan Drury of Edmunds told The Verge.

That is why this moment matters beyond car lots. If fuel stays elevated, the resale EV market could become the fastest-moving part of the electric transition, especially for households priced out of new models and looking for lower operating costs.
What happens next depends on two moving pieces: whether oil markets cool, and whether dealerships can keep enough lower-priced EV inventory in stock if buyer traffic keeps climbing. Reporting from Wired suggests more leased EVs are set to return to the market this year, which could help meet that demand.
For now, higher gas prices are doing what policy and marketing often could not: making used EVs look practical to more buyers.
