Trump Eyes Giant “Arc de Trump” in Washington That Would Eclipse Lincoln Memorial
President Donald Trump is pushing a proposal for an oversized triumphal arch along the Potomac River in the nation’s capital that would tower over iconic memorials and become a permanent monument to the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The plan’s bold scale has already stirred debate, with preservationists and design experts questioning how a 250-foot structure could fit into Washington, D.C.’s historic skyline and symbolic landscape.
According to The Washington Post, Trump has reviewed design options for the arch, including smaller versions, but is now said to prefer a 250-foot model that would sit near Memorial Circle just off Arlington Memorial Bridge, directly across from the Lincoln Memorial. Trump reportedly likes the notion of “250 for 250” — matching the arch’s height with the nation’s 250th year.
The plot of land under consideration is controlled by the National Park Service, and formal plans have not yet been submitted to federal review panels, making the timeline uncertain. Architectural historians have raised concerns that such a large monument could disrupt planned views and pedestrian flows between memorial sites.

“This would make Arlington House look tiny, you’d lose an important part of the vista,” one expert told The Daily Beast, warning about scale issues.
The arch, dubbed by some media as the informal “Arc de Trump,” draws reference to Europe’s famed Arc de Triomphe in Paris but would be significantly taller than its inspiration.
Why it matters…
The debate reflects broader tensions in Washington over how new monuments should balance commemoration with preservation, and whether one of the capital’s most cherished visual corridors should be altered.
Planners and the White House have yet to finalise designs or secure site approvals, and major reviews by preservation authorities are expected in the coming months.
Officials say what happens next is pending those reviews and discussions with stakeholders across the capital.
