Trump Faces New Poll Blow as Democrats Jump to 48–40 National Lead
A new national poll shows President Donald Trump’s approval rating remaining negative as Democrats open a wider lead in the race for Congress.
The Morning Consult survey, conducted March 13–16 among roughly 2,200 registered voters, found Trump at 43% approval and 54% disapproval, while Democrats lead the generic ballot 48% to 40%.
That eight-point advantage marks the largest Democratic lead in this particular tracking cycle and exceeds most recent polling averages.
National aggregates have generally shown Democrats ahead by smaller margins, typically between two and six points, according to RealClearPolling and other trackers.
The gap raises questions about whether this poll reflects a temporary shift or an early signal of broader movement among voters.

“Trump has had a negative net approval rating for a full year,” CNN data analyst Harry Enten said, pointing to sustained weakness with independents.
The trend matters because presidential approval often correlates with midterm outcomes, especially in competitive House districts.
Recent polling has also shown erosion in key demographics, including independents and younger voters, while Democrats have gained ground on economic and policy issues.
If the numbers hold, Republicans could face increased risk in battleground districts where small shifts in voter sentiment can decide control of Congress.
For now, both parties are likely to watch upcoming polls closely to see whether this wider Democratic lead stabilizes or narrows.
The next round of national surveys could determine whether this snapshot becomes a trend.
