Trump Faces Shock Loss as Democrat Flips Mar-a-Lago District by 2 Points
A Democrat has flipped a Republican-held Florida seat that includes Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, drawing immediate national attention ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Emily Gregory defeated Trump-endorsed Republican Jon Maples in a special election for Florida House District 87, a race long viewed as safely Republican. The outcome is being framed by Democrats as a warning sign for the GOP, while Republicans argue it reflects local conditions rather than a broader shift.
According to the Associated Press and multiple outlets, Gregory won by roughly two percentage points, a sharp reversal in a district Republicans carried by about 19 points in 2024.
The district’s connection to Trump has intensified scrutiny, with Mar-a-Lago located inside its boundaries and Trump personally endorsing Maples. He also voted in the election by mail, despite repeatedly criticizing that method.
“Tonight’s result sends a clear message that people want Florida to move in a new direction,” Gregory said in a statement.

The result adds to a pattern of Democratic overperformance in special elections since Trump’s return to office, raising questions about voter sentiment in traditionally Republican areas.
Still, Republicans maintain a supermajority in Florida’s legislature and have downplayed the race as low-turnout and locally driven, limiting its predictive value for November.
Attention now shifts to whether similar districts show movement in upcoming races, as both parties test whether this upset reflects a broader electoral trend.
