Trump Feud Escalates as Pope Leo XIV Blasts ‘Tyrants’ Driving War Spending
Pope Leo XIV is escalating his clash with Donald Trump, warning the world is being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants” as tensions spill into policy and funding decisions.
The remarks, delivered in Cameroon, did not name Trump directly but come amid a growing feud tied to the U.S. role in the Iran conflict. According to The Guardian and Washington Post reporting, the pope criticized leaders who use religion to justify war and prioritize military spending over human needs.
The conflict intensified after Trump publicly attacked the pope and posted a controversial AI image of himself as Jesus Christ, later deleted. U.S. Catholic bishops have since defended Leo’s position on just war principles.

At the same time, the Trump administration canceled an $11 million contract with Catholic Charities in Miami, which supports migrant children, according to Newsweek and local reporting.
Church leaders say the move could shut down long-running programs, raising questions about whether the dispute is now moving beyond rhetoric into policy consequences.
