Trump Files Airport Trademark as Florida Advances Palm Beach International Renaming
Donald Trump’s company filed to trademark airport names the same week Florida lawmakers voted to rename Palm Beach International Airport after him.
The timing has raised questions about branding, licensing, and whether public infrastructure could intersect with private trademark control.
According to the Associated Press, DTTM Operations LLC, an entity tied to the Trump Organization, filed federal trademark applications on Feb. 13 and 14 for “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” and “DJT.” The filings cover airport services and related branded merchandise.

Days later, the Florida Senate passed House Bill 919, which would rename Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach as “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The measure now heads to Gov. Ron DeSantis for consideration.
Supporters of the bill say the designation would not involve royalties and would be a symbolic honor. Opponents argue the filings create potential conflicts between state authority and private trademark rights.
A spokesperson for the Trump Organization told Good Morning America the filings were made “to protect the name from misuse.”

Legal experts told the Associated Press that trademarking a name in anticipation of public infrastructure renaming is uncommon, and the arrangement would likely require coordination between the state and the company.
Even if signed into law, the renaming would still require Federal Aviation Administration approval before taking effect.
The next step depends on whether Gov. DeSantis signs the bill and how federal regulators respond.
For now, the airport’s name remains unchanged.
