Trump Keeps $70M Deportation Jet for VIP Use After DHS Spending Scrutiny
The Trump administration is keeping a $70 million jet originally tied to deportation operations, but its current use is raising new questions about federal spending.
The aircraft was pitched as part of a mass deportation strategy under former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, yet it is now being reassigned for use by senior officials and potentially the first lady, according to the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 was acquired through Immigration and Customs Enforcement and described by DHS as a dual-purpose aircraft for deportations and Cabinet travel. Officials said it would reduce costs compared to military flights and support long-range operations tied to immigration enforcement.
Internal concerns surfaced early. The jet’s luxury configuration, including a bedroom, shower, kitchen, and a bar, stood in contrast to standard deportation flights, which typically transport 50 to 100 detainees, according to NBC News reporting.
The shift in control has added another layer. After Noem’s removal, the White House took over oversight of the aircraft, despite expectations inside DHS that the purchase might be scrapped.

“This aircraft will be available to Cabinet members who need secure command and control,” a DHS spokesperson said.
The controversy now centers on whether immigration funding is being redirected. Critics argue resources allocated for enforcement are supporting executive travel, while the administration maintains the aircraft fulfills security and mobility needs tied to federal operations.
The issue also connects to a broader pattern. Investigations into DHS spending under Noem have already raised questions about large contracts and aircraft purchases, drawing bipartisan scrutiny.
Further congressional review and oversight hearings are expected as lawmakers examine how deportation-related funds are being used.
For now, the aircraft remains in service under White House control.
