Trump Orders 2,200 Marines, 3 Warships Toward Middle East Amid Iran Escalation
A U.S. Marine force of about 2,200 troops is being ordered toward the Middle East aboard three Navy amphibious warships, according to U.S. officials cited by ABC News.
The move comes as military tensions involving Iran escalate and U.S. operations in the region intensify.
The deployment involves the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, a forward-deployed force normally based in Japan under U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Officials told ABC News the unit is being redirected toward the Middle East aboard three amphibious ships capable of launching aircraft and landing forces.
Marine expeditionary units typically carry helicopters, MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and F-35B fighter jets, allowing them to conduct amphibious landings, evacuation missions or air support operations if ordered.

The redeployment adds significant capability to U.S. Central Command as Washington continues military operations targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
Officials stress the movement does not automatically mean American troops will enter combat on Iranian territory, but it provides commanders with rapid response options if the situation escalates further.
“It gives the United States flexible operational capabilities in the Gulf,” one official told ABC News.

The deployment follows a series of strikes and confrontations tied to Iran’s military activity and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil shipments. U.S. officials say reinforcing the region is meant to deter further escalation while keeping military options available.
President Donald Trump has also said U.S. forces have already severely degraded Iran’s missile and naval capabilities during the ongoing campaign.
Military analysts note that Marine expeditionary units are often used as rapid-deployment forces capable of responding quickly to crises, evacuations or regional conflicts.
For now, the Marine force is moving toward the region while U.S. commanders assess how the conflict may evolve in the coming days.
