Trump Orders JD Vance to Lead National Fraud Task Force Targeting State Programs
President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order placing Vice President JD Vance in charge of a nationwide anti-fraud task force — a move that immediately escalated tensions with several Democratic-led states.
The new initiative expands an aggressive federal crackdown that already targeted Minnesota, where the administration halted hundreds of millions of dollars in Medicaid funding over fraud concerns.
According to Reuters, the White House said Trump will formally establish the task force and direct Vance to oversee investigations into fraud across federal benefit programs. The administration says the effort will review how states administer programs such as healthcare, housing assistance, and food aid.

Early reports say the initiative could examine oversight in states including California, Illinois, New York, Maine, and Colorado, though some of those details come from documents that Reuters said it has not independently verified.
“We want to make sure states are being responsible stewards of taxpayer money,” Vance said while defending the administration’s fraud crackdown.
The policy push comes after federal officials temporarily withheld about $259.5 million in Medicaid funding from Minnesota, citing alleged fraud tied to state-run programs. Minnesota officials say the move could affect healthcare access for vulnerable residents.
Governor Tim Walz and other Democratic leaders have accused the administration of targeting blue states for political reasons, arguing that fraud investigations should focus on specific criminal cases rather than punishing entire states.
The administration insists the task force is necessary to protect federal programs from abuse and recover taxpayer funds.
Trump is expected to sign the executive order at the White House, formally launching the national fraud investigation effort and setting up a potentially contentious battle between federal investigators and state governments.
