Trump Pushes Marijuana Reclassification as DEA Decision Nears Wednesday
The U.S. government is preparing to reclassify marijuana, but the timeline and final decision remain uncertain.
According to Axios, the Trump administration could move as soon as Wednesday to shift cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III, a major change that would ease federal restrictions and expand research access. Reuters reported the move would also lower tax burdens for cannabis companies, sending related stocks sharply higher.

The change follows a December executive order from President Donald Trump directing agencies to speed up the process, building on a review launched under former President Joe Biden. Marijuana is currently classified alongside heroin and LSD, despite growing state-level legalization.
But the DEA still has final authority and has not confirmed the move publicly, leaving key questions unresolved.
If finalized, the shift would mark one of the biggest federal policy changes on marijuana in decades, without fully legalizing it nationwide.
