Trump Quadruples Argentine Beef Imports, Sparking GOP Rancher Uproar
President Trump signed an executive order Friday that temporarily quadruples U.S. beef imports from Argentina, a controversial step aimed at addressing high domestic beef prices. According to Reuters and industry reporting, the move increases the tariff-rate quota for lean beef trimmings by 80,000 metric tons for 2026, with shipments to be released in quarterly tranches starting Feb. 13.
The decision — part of a broader new trade and investment agreement with Argentina — has sparked immediate pushback from U.S. cattle producers and some lawmakers, who say it could undercut American ranchers without delivering meaningful price relief.
Officials in Washington argue the expansion is a temporary response to record beef prices and the lowest U.S. cattle herd in decades, which have driven costs up for consumers and food companies.
But cattle industry groups including the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association contend the policy is a “misguided effort” that threatens domestic producers and won’t substantially lower grocery prices.

“Instead of imports that sideline American ranchers, we should be focused on solutions that cut red tape and support growing our cattle herd,” Nebraska Republican Sen. Deb Fischer said in a statement.
The dispute highlights rising tensions over how best to balance consumer price pressures with support for U.S. agriculture. Some economists note that even a fourfold increase in Argentine beef imports represents a relatively small slice of total U.S. beef consumption and may only marginally affect prices.
With grilling season and midterm political cycles approaching, the debate over trade policy and food affordability is expected to intensify. Congress could hold hearings, and industry leaders may press for adjustments or additional protections for domestic producers in the coming weeks.
The administration says it will monitor market impacts and adjust as needed as the year unfolds.
