Trump Receives Loud Boos at Madison Square Garden During NBA Finals Appearance
President Donald Trump was greeted with loud boos from sections of the Madison Square Garden crowd Monday night as he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
Multiple news organizations, including Reuters, reported that fans jeered when Trump appeared on the arena video board during the national anthem before tipoff. The reaction occurred during one of the most anticipated sporting events in New York in decades, with the Knicks hosting their first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden in 27 years.
Trump attended as a guest of Knicks owner James Dolan and later downplayed the reaction, telling reporters he believed the reception was positive.
The appearance carried historic significance. According to Reuters, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game.

The visit also transformed the area around Madison Square Garden into a heavily secured zone. Fans encountered long lines, restricted pedestrian access, and extensive fencing around the arena. An outdoor watch party traditionally held for Knicks playoff games was canceled because of security concerns.
Much of the online conversation after the game focused on two issues. One was the crowd reaction itself, which quickly spread across social media through video clips shared by sports and political accounts. The second involved frustration from some fans who blamed the security operation for delays and disruptions around the arena.
Supporters of the president argued that some cheers and patriotic chants were audible in addition to the boos and accused media outlets of emphasizing only the negative reaction. Critics highlighted the jeering as a reflection of Trump’s standing in New York, where he remains a polarizing figure despite his long association with the city.
The Spurs defeated the Knicks 115-111, cutting New York’s series lead to 2-1.
