Trump Renews Push to Remove Lisa Cook as Fed Independence Fight Escalates
President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, reopening a legal and political fight over the independence of the central bank after the Supreme Court previously blocked his earlier attempt.
The White House is moving ahead again over mortgage fraud allegations tied to Cook’s past property records, according to AP and Reuters. Cook has denied wrongdoing, and her attorney Abbe Lowell called the claims baseless while accusing the administration of trying to interfere with the Fed’s independence.
The dispute carries consequences far beyond Cook’s seat. Federal Reserve governors serve long, staggered terms so monetary policy is insulated from short-term political pressure. Federal law says governors serve 14-year terms unless they are removed “for cause.” Cook was reappointed in 2023 for a term ending Jan. 31, 2038.

That structure matters because the Fed sets interest-rate policy that affects mortgage rates, credit cards, auto loans, business borrowing, employment conditions, and inflation. If presidents can more easily remove governors over disputed allegations, the central bank could face more direct political pressure when rate decisions conflict with White House priorities.
The social and political reaction is already focused on that independence question. Bill Pulte, whose earlier referral helped fuel the allegations, has continued pressing the case publicly, while Warren and other Democrats have framed the removal effort as an attack on the Fed. Reddit law and politics communities are also discussing whether the new process is designed to satisfy the Supreme Court’s due-process concerns.
The next step is Cook’s response and any renewed court challenge if Trump again attempts to remove her.
