Trump Says Ilhan Omar Should Be Jailed or Deported as Minnesota Fraud Probes Expand
Federal fraud investigations in Minnesota are intensifying as President Trump escalates his response and openly suggests criminal punishment for Democratic leaders in the state. The cases involve alleged misuse of public funds intended for child nutrition, childcare, autism services, housing assistance, and other programs.
The scale of the investigations has raised national attention. Prosecutors have charged more than 75 defendants in the Feeding Our Future case, accusing them of stealing at least $250 million by falsely claiming to feed children who did not exist or inflating meal counts, according to CBS News and PBS.
Authorities say that case is only part of a broader problem. Prosecutors estimate that fraud across 14 Minnesota state and federal programs since 2018 could reach into the billions of dollars, though the totals remain under review and have not been finalized, PBS reports.
President Trump has seized on the investigations, claiming losses could total $19 billion and branding the issue “Minnesota Somalia Fraud.” In recent remarks and posts, Trump accused Rep. Ilhan Omar of knowing “everything there is to know” about the schemes and said she should be jailed or deported to Somalia, while also attacking Gov. Tim Walz and Minnesota’s Democratic leadership.

“There is massive fraud in Minnesota, and it’s been allowed to happen,” Trump said in a recent post.
The administration has taken concrete action, freezing some Minnesota childcare funds and deploying additional FBI and Department of Homeland Security agents to assist investigations, according to NPR.
There is no public evidence linking Omar to any fraud scheme. Omar, a U.S. citizen, has condemned the rhetoric, warning against blaming entire communities for criminal activity. Legal experts note deporting a citizen would require denaturalization based on proven fraud, a process not underway in her case.
Investigations and prosecutions are expected to continue as authorities determine whether additional charges or funding actions follow.
