Trump Says “Very Good Call” With Walz and Sends Border Czar to Minnesota Amid ICE Chaos
President Donald Trump said Monday that he had a “very good call” with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz about the ongoing federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, signaling a possible shift in tone amid escalating tensions. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the governor reached out “to work together with respect to Minnesota,” and that they were “on a similar wavelength.”
The announcement comes as Minnesota reels from widespread protests and legal challenges tied to “Operation Metro Surge,” a massive deployment of federal immigration agents targeting undocumented immigrants. Two U.S. citizens — including a 37-year-old nurse, Alex Pretti — have been shot and killed by federal agents during operations, fueling public outrage and calls for the mission to be halted.
Trump said he would have Tom Homan, his administration’s “border czar,” contact Walz and travel to Minnesota to oversee the enforcement effort, describing the move as aimed at locating “any and all criminals” and praising alleged successes in other cities.

But the governor has publicly demanded the removal of federal agents, calling the situation “despicable beyond all description” and seeking an end to the surge. State and local officials have sued the Department of Homeland Security, and a federal judge began hearing arguments Monday on whether to temporarily halt the immigration operation.
Critics online have questioned Trump’s framing of the conversation, noting the sharp contrast between his account and Walz’s prior statements. Supporters, by contrast, hailed the call as a sign Walz is “caving” under pressure and urged cooperation on immigration enforcement.
Legal proceedings continue this week in Minneapolis, and both sides are expected to issue statements after further talks between federal and state officials.
