Trump Sparks Backlash With Post About Rob Reiner After Hollywood Homicide
LOS ANGELES — President Donald Trump is facing bipartisan backlash after posting a controversial message about the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home late Saturday.
Los Angeles police confirmed Sunday that the deaths are being investigated as a homicide. Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested later that day on suspicion of murder. Authorities have not released a motive and have cautioned against speculation, stating early indicators suggest a domestic incident rather than a politically motivated attack.
Rob Reiner, 78, was an acclaimed director and actor known for films including When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and Stand by Me. He was also a prominent liberal activist and a vocal critic of Trump. Michele Singer Reiner, 71, was a producer and longtime partner in his work.
Early Monday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social offering brief condolences before pivoting to mock Reiner’s political views. In the post, Trump suggested Reiner suffered from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and implied the filmmaker’s political anger contributed to his death, before concluding, “May Rob and Michele rest in peace.”

The post quickly drew widespread condemnation online, including from conservative commentators and Republican officials, who described it as inappropriate given the ongoing homicide investigation.
Piers Morgan called the post “dreadful” and urged Trump to delete it. Other right-leaning voices criticized the timing and tone, saying it undermined calls for restraint amid rising political violence. Some Trump supporters defended the message, arguing Reiner’s past rhetoric toward the president justified the response.
The backlash also revived comparisons to the September assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whose killing sparked national debate over political violence and public mourning. Critics noted that Reiner had publicly condemned Kirk’s murder at the time, calling it “absolute horror” and stating that violence is never a solution to political disagreements.
Democratic figures and media commentators highlighted that contrast, accusing Trump of politicizing a tragedy while the investigation remains ongoing. Trump has not issued a follow-up statement or clarification as of Monday afternoon.
Police say the investigation into the Reiners’ deaths is continuing, and a court date for Nick Reiner has not yet been announced.
