Trump Warns He Won’t Sign Any Bills Until SAVE America Act Clears Senate
President Donald Trump is escalating pressure on Congress by threatening to stop signing legislation until lawmakers pass a sweeping voter-eligibility bill.
The demand targets the SAVE America Act, a Republican proposal requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.
Trump issued the warning Sunday in a Truth Social post, saying the measure “must be done immediately” and declaring he would not sign other bills until it reaches his desk, according to Reuters and Axios.
The legislation already passed the House in February by a narrow vote and now faces a difficult path in the Senate, where most bills need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
That requirement creates an immediate hurdle because Republicans do not hold enough seats to pass the bill without Democratic support.
“It supersedes everything else,” Trump wrote about the legislation.
The proposal would require documentary proof of citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate for voter registration and would impose penalties on election officials who register people without proper documentation.

Supporters say the measure would strengthen enforcement against non-citizen voting, which is already illegal under federal law.
Opponents argue the documentation rules could block millions of eligible voters who lack immediate access to citizenship records.
The standoff could also complicate other legislation moving through Congress, particularly as lawmakers negotiate funding bills and other priorities ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The Senate is expected to debate whether to bring the bill to the floor or explore procedural strategies such as forcing a talking filibuster.
For now, the dispute signals a growing clash in Washington over federal election rules and the balance of power heading into the next national vote.
