Trump’s Fox News Poll Problem Becomes Midterm Warning Sign as Economy Frustration Spreads
A new Fox News poll is giving Democrats a sharper midterm argument against President Donald Trump. The economy, once one of his strongest political issues, is now showing signs of becoming a liability.
Fox reported that Trump’s overall approval stood at 41%, while his approval on handling the economy hit a new low. The same poll found that 76% of voters viewed the economy negatively, with large numbers saying groceries, utilities, health care and housing had become more expensive.
That matters because affordability is likely to be one of the defining issues of the 2026 midterm elections. When voters feel squeezed by prices, the party controlling the White House often faces a harder political environment.
The poll also created visible reaction online. Rep. Jim McGovern, a Massachusetts Democrat, shared the Fox poll framing on social media and wrote that it was damaging for Trump when even a Fox poll showed approval that low. A polling-focused Reddit discussion also highlighted Trump’s 41% approval and 59% disapproval as a major warning sign.

The poll is not just another data point. Democrats are using the Fox branding itself as part of the political message: if a Fox poll shows trouble for Trump, they argue, the problem may be harder for Republicans to dismiss.
Fox’s own political analysis also pointed to the midterm risk, saying the economy and everyday expenses helped Trump and Republicans in 2024 but are now working against them.
Trump still has strong support among many Republican voters, and his ratings on issues such as border security remain stronger than his economy numbers. But the midterm danger for Republicans is not limited to whether Trump’s base abandons him.
The bigger risk is that economic frustration lowers GOP enthusiasm, pushes independents toward Democrats, or forces Republican candidates to defend prices that voters blame on the White House.
