The Department of Justice has moved to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The official reasoning? Concerns that the case was politically motivated and could interfere with his ability to fight immigration. But if you squint past the legal jargon, a darker picture emerges. Donald Trump’s influence over the justice system may be stronger than ever.

Trump, never one to pass up an opportunity to play puppet master, has publicly sympathized with Adams, painting him as another victim of a so-called corrupt DOJ. It’s a convenient narrative for the former president, who himself faces multiple indictments. But why would Trump, a Republican firebrand, go to bat for Adams, a Democrat who has long positioned himself as tough but pragmatic on crime? The answer lies in transactional politics, a game Trump plays better than anyone.
One potential explanation? A well-timed reward. Just two months ago, Adams orchestrated the high-profile arrest of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson (Justice.gov). Mangione’s alleged motivations—a deep-seated resentment toward the health insurance industry—have struck a nerve with segments of the public, leading to an unexpected outpouring of financial support for his legal defense (People.com). Trump’s wealthy investors have every reason NOT to want to see Luigi canonized.
Plus, a career conman will always tip his hat to another expert in the game. Trump even spoke out in defense of Adams and Cuomo after they were hit with sexual abuse allegations mirroring his own (Politico). Notably, Adams refused to disavow the support.
Indeed, Trump has already been pushing the idea that he’s not that extreme, using Adams' case to frame the DOJ as politically biased and weaponized against both parties. He even expressed public sympathy for Adams at a high-profile event, implying that his legal troubles stemmed from his criticism of Biden’s immigration policies (Gothamist), not his overt criminality.
This isn’t about justice. It’s about control. The move to dismiss Adams’ charges reeks of political theater, with Trump playing the role of the power broker, rewarding loyalty, settling scores, and manipulating the system for his own ends. If the DOJ is now bending to his will, we should all ask: who else is he protecting? And who’s next on the chopping block?

This is a gift to Mangione's lawyer. Nothing like widespread corruption among the elected and connected to drive the "two sets of rules" message home to the public.
I can't imagine how a jury of Luigi's peers might want to remedy that one...
