Trump’s ‘I Love the Inflation’ Comment Gives Democrats Cost-of-Living Attack
President Donald Trump drew immediate political criticism Wednesday after saying he “love[s] the inflation” while responding to new data showing consumer prices rose 4.2% over the past year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said May inflation accelerated from April, with energy costs accounting for more than 60% of the monthly increase. Gasoline prices were up 40.5% from a year earlier, while core inflation, excluding food and energy, rose 2.9%.

CBS News reported Trump said the numbers were “great” and linked his response to U.S. actions involving Iranian oil and the Strait of Hormuz. Democrats quickly moved to frame the remark as evidence that Trump is disconnected from household costs.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Whip Katherine Clark criticized the comment on X, while the DNC issued a rapid-response statement targeting Trump’s cost-of-living record.
The political risk is clear. Inflation remains well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% longer-run target.
