Trump's Press Secretary Slams NYC Mayor’s Wife Over $630 Boots, Calls Them ‘Classic Communists’
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed she blasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, over her fashion choice at his January 1 swearing-in, and linked it to political contradiction.
Leavitt’s social-media comments triggered a political firestorm by suggesting the luxury boots worn by Duwaji were at odds with the mayor’s affordability agenda.
According to Inquisitr, Leavitt reposted a story about the $630 Miista boots Duwaji wore and wrote that New Yorkers are asked to “hand over more than half their income to the government while she wears designer boots worth your weekly paycheck.”
The boots, detailed by multiple outlets including Yahoo! and The Daily Beast, are high-end leather Shelleys with a sculpted heel. The stylist who dressed Duwaji says the outfit was borrowed or loaned, complicating claims about personal spending.

Leavitt framed her critique as a broader comment on what she called “classic Communists, rules for you, but not for them,” tying fashion optics to ideological debate.
Mamdani, sworn in as New York’s 112th mayor and promising rent freezes, universal childcare, and free bus service funded by taxing wealthy residents, hasn’t endorsed the idea that citizens would surrender half their income.
“It’s about optics and consistency between message and actions,” a political analyst said.
The dispute has spurred online debate about class, image, and political narrative, drawing reactions from both fashion and political commentators.
As Mamdani begins his term, attention now shifts to how his policy rollout will address affordability issues beyond ceremonial headlines.
