Trump’s SOTU Ratings Slide to Smallest Audience of His Presidency
President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address drew an estimated 32.6 million U.S. television viewers, according to Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel ratings, making this the lowest-rated SOTU of his presidency. That figure is down from the 36.6 million viewers who watched his 2025 address to Congress and roughly on par with former President Joe Biden’s 2024 address.
Viewership decline raises questions about public engagement at a time of deep political polarization in the country. Critics have pointed to sinking approval ratings and broader distrust in major institutions as factors behind the dwindling audience.
The preliminary Nielsen data shows Fox News Channel led all networks with about 9.1 million viewers, while broadcast networks such as ABC and NBC trailed with roughly 5.1 M and 3.6 M respectively. This year’s speech was also the longest State of the Union on record, running nearly 108 minutes before a joint session of Congress.

However, a subset of outlets reported a lower 27.8 million figure when counting only the seven most-watched networks, highlighting methodological differences in audience measurement.
One media executive said the ratings drop reflects broader trends in live TV consumption as streaming competition grows. Some analysts note that viewership tends to peak in a president’s first years and taper over time.
Despite the smaller audience, Nielsen confirmed the address remained among the year’s most-watched televised events.
Going forward, broadcasters will release final consolidated viewership data later this week, which could slightly alter total figures but is expected to confirm the overall downward trend.
