Trump’s Tariff War: Why You’ll Pay More for Everything
Higher prices, job losses, and economic chaos—Trump’s trade war is back, and this time, he’s hitting America’s allies harder than its enemies.
Donald Trump is back on his tariff warpath; this time, he’s hitting America’s allies harder than its enemies. His latest move? Massive 25% tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and the EU while slapping China—America’s actual economic rival—with a mere 10% tax.
If this sounds backward, that’s because it is. These tariffs won’t bring back jobs or lower prices. They’ll do the opposite—jacking up the cost of food, gas, cars, and everyday goods while punishing American farmers, auto workers, and small businesses.
We’ve seen this movie before. Trump’s first-term tariffs backfired spectacularly, leading to higher prices, mass layoffs, and a brutal trade war with China. But now, he’s doubling down—and this time, the economic wreckage could be even worse.

Who’s Getting Hit and What’s Going Up in Price?
Trump’s tariff hit list includes:
Canada & Mexico → 25% tariffs on imports, justified under the excuse of immigration and drug trafficking.
European Union (EU) → 25% tariffs over “unfair trade practices”—which sounds like an excuse to shake down allies.
China → Just 10% tariffs, despite years of Trump calling them America’s biggest economic threat.
So what’s about to get more expensive?
🔥 Cars & Auto Parts:
Canada and Mexico supply most auto parts used in American car manufacturing. Tariffs mean higher car prices and possible job losses at Ford and GM.
Expect to pay thousands more for a new or used vehicle.

🍔 Food & Groceries:
40% of U.S. fresh produce comes from Mexico. Tariffs will jack up prices on avocados, tomatoes, and beef.
Canada’s dairy, seafood, and wheat exports will also get taxed, driving up supermarket costs.

⛽ Gas & Energy:
Canada is the top foreign supplier of crude oil to the U.S.. Tariffs = higher gas prices.
This will hit trucking, shipping, and airlines, raising prices on everything that moves.

Many TVs, washing machines, and electronics are assembled in Mexico and the EU. Tariffs = higher prices at Best Buy and Walmart.

Why Is Trump Hitting Allies Harder Than Enemies?
What kind of logic is this? Canada, Mexico, and the EU are longtime U.S. trade partners. Conversely, China has been accused of currency manipulation, intellectual property theft, and dumping cheap goods into the U.S. market. So why is China getting off easy while allies get slammed?
The answer? Trump is using trade as a political weapon.
He wants Canada and Mexico to crack down on immigration—so instead of working diplomatically, he’s threatening their economies.
He thinks tariffs make him look “tough” on trade, even though his first-term tariffs did nothing to bring back manufacturing jobs.
He’s playing to his base, knowing that the people most hurt by these tariffs won’t blame him—they’ll blame the companies passing on the cost.
This Isn’t Like Past U.S. Tariffs—It’s Worse
1. Past Tariffs Targeted Rivals—These Target Friends
George W. Bush (2002): 30% steel tariffs, mainly aimed at China and non-allied nations.
Obama (2012): Tariffs on Chinese tires, not U.S. allies.
Trump (2018-2019): Tariffs on China—which failed to shrink the trade deficit.
Trump (2025): Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and the EU—higher than on China.

2. Tariffs Didn’t Work Last Time—They Won’t Work Now
Trump’s 2018 tariffs caused U.S. manufacturing to slow down, raised costs for businesses, and led to farm bankruptcies after China retaliated.
The U.S. trade deficit grew under Trump’s first-term tariffs.

3. These Tariffs Will Hit Harder Due to Inflation
In 2018-2019, inflation was low, so the impact was terrible—but not catastrophic.
In 2025, inflation is already high—meaning tariffs will push it even higher.
Who Will Get Hurt the Most?
👨👩👦 Working-Class & Middle-Class Americans
These tariffs will cost you more every day if you drive a car, buy groceries, or fill up your gas tank.
👨🌾 Farmers & Agriculture Workers
Retaliatory tariffs from Canada, Mexico, and the EU will gut U.S. exports—just like in 2018.
🏭 Auto Workers
Ford, GM, and Stellantis rely on cheap Canadian and Mexican parts. If tariffs go through, expect layoffs and factory shutdowns.
🏢 Small Businesses & Retailers
Local stores and restaurants can’t absorb higher costs like Walmart or Amazon. Expect higher prices, layoffs, and closures.
Bottom Line: A Trade War Against America Itself
Trump’s first trade war failed. It raised prices, killed jobs, and hurt the very people he claimed to fight for. In 2025, he’s going bigger, bolder—and dumber—by punishing America’s closest allies more than its biggest economic threat.
These tariffs aren’t about fixing trade—they’re about flexing political muscle. But working Americans will be the ones paying the price.

As if these impending price hikes aren’t bad enough, tariffs will raise prices on everything. It will be easy to sneak in unnecessary price hikes alongside unavoidable ones. For example, trump tariffs on washing machines (during his previous term) “somehow” caused dryer prices to increase at the same rate as washer prices, even though there was no tariff on dryers. That was sheer greed on the part of the manufacturers.
