Trump’s White House Ballroom Project Set for First Public Hearing on Jan. 8
President Trump’s plan to build a massive new ballroom on the White House grounds is moving to its first public hearing stage, with federal planners slated to review the project in early January. The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) will host an information presentation on January 8, 2026, marking the first formal opportunity for commissioners to question the controversial proposal.
The ballroom concept, roughly 90,000 square feet and estimated to cost $400 million, has sparked backlash from preservation advocates and lawmakers who contend the demolition of the historic East Wing last fall occurred with inadequate public notice or legal oversight.
According to Reuters, the NCPC meeting will not include public testimony but allows commissioners to engage with White House officials about the design and scope of the project.

Legal challenges persist: the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s lawsuit prompted a judge to require the administration to submit plans to review bodies, though a request to halt construction was denied due to incomplete finalized plans.
“The commission’s review will bring needed transparency to a project of national significance,” said Carol Quillen, president of the preservation group.
The hearing matters because it signals a shift from behind-closed-doors planning to formal oversight, potentially setting precedent for how White House alterations are vetted under federal law.
After the presentation, a formal review phase this spring could open the door for public testimony and further scrutiny of the $400 million proposal.
As criticism mounts over funding transparency and historic preservation, all eyes will be on the January session.
Whats next?
A full NCPC review and public comment period anticipated in spring 2026.
