United Flight Diverted to Wisconsin After Passenger Allegedly Attempts Cockpit Breach
A United Airlines flight bound for Minneapolis was diverted to Madison, Wisconsin on Friday night after a passenger allegedly attempted multiple times to enter the cockpit, triggering a federal law-enforcement response.
United Flight 2005 departed Chicago O’Hare International Airport before changing course and landing safely at Dane County Regional Airport. United Airlines said the diversion was necessary to address a security concern involving an unruly passenger. No injuries were reported among the 147 passengers and six crew members onboard.
According to statements from the FBI and airport officials, the passenger was detained after the aircraft landed. Federal authorities are now reviewing the incident. The airline later resumed the flight to Minneapolis after the passenger was removed.

Air traffic communications reported by multiple news outlets indicated crew members struggled to maintain control of the passenger after repeated attempts to reach the cockpit area. Those reports have heightened attention around the incident because cockpit access is among the most heavily protected areas of commercial aircraft security.
While aviation security incidents remain rare, any reported attempt to access a flight deck typically results in immediate intervention from flight crews, law enforcement, and federal agencies. Reinforced cockpit doors and security procedures introduced after the September 11 attacks were designed specifically to prevent unauthorized access during flight.
Authorities have not released additional details about the passenger’s identity, motive, or potential charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
