University of Minnesota Students, Workers Walk Out Today in Statewide Strike Against ICE
University of Minnesota students, workers, and faculty are walking out today as part of a statewide general strike demanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement leave Minnesota.
The action, known as “ICE Out of Minnesota: Day of Truth and Freedom,” is calling for no work, no school, and no shopping across the state as protests and marches unfold Friday morning. Organizers say the strike is a direct response to expanded ICE activity and public outrage following a fatal shooting involving an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
On campus, multiple unions and student organizations have endorsed the shutdown. Groups including Graduate Labor Union UE Local 1105, AFSCME Local 3800, and several student-led organizations confirmed participation in today’s walkout.
The strike is designed to disrupt daily operations and apply economic pressure, extending beyond the University of Minnesota to businesses and workplaces statewide. However, the scope of participation on campus remains unclear as classes begin and workers decide whether to cross picket lines.

“Over a dozen student and labor organizations have joined the call to walk out against ICE,” UE Local 1105 said in a statement.
The University of Minnesota has not announced an official closure and has urged peaceful protest as events continue throughout the day. Marches and rallies are expected in downtown Minneapolis, with campus demonstrators encouraged to join larger gatherings.
Today’s action places the university at the center of a growing statewide protest movement and could test how public institutions respond to coordinated labor and student strikes.
Organizers say additional demonstrations and statements may follow later today depending on turnout and response from state and federal officials.
