U.S. Airlines Expand Fees After Jet Fuel Jumps 50%, Raising Travel Costs
Travel is getting more expensive across the U.S., but Americans aren’t backing off.
Airfare prices have surged nearly 15% over the past year, while overall travel costs are up 7%, the biggest jump in three years, according to NerdWallet. At the same time, airlines are raising baggage and seat fees as fuel costs spike due to global tensions.

According to Barron’s and The Washington Post, jet fuel prices have jumped as much as 50%, pushing airlines to pass costs directly to travelers. That’s happening even as demand stays strong, giving carriers room to keep increasing fares.
Hotels and dining are also creeping higher, with restaurant prices up 3.8% year-over-year and far higher over the long term.
The bigger issue is affordability. A recent analysis found U.S. households now need over $15,000 more annually just to maintain the same standard of living.
That tension is reshaping how Americans travel, not whether they travel at all.
