U.S. and Allied Forces Launch Major Strikes on ISIS Across Syria After Deadly Attack
The U.S. military and partner forces struck multiple Islamic State targets across Syria in a major air and precision-guided munitions campaign, officials said, renewing conflict in the region and signaling continuing retaliation after recent militant attacks. According to U.S. Central Command, the operations hit targets nationwide but did not immediately report casualties.
The latest strikes escalate tensions in Syria, where ISIS remnants have periodically attacked coalition forces, including a December 2025 ambush near Palmyra that killed two U.S. soldiers and their American interpreter. That attack spurred Operation Hawkeye Strike, a wider campaign now entering its second wave.
CENTCOM said in a statement the large-scale actions occurred around 12:30 p.m. Eastern and involved U.S. forces and allied partners, including confirmed participation from Jordan, though other partners were not named. The strikes reportedly employed more than 90 precision munitions from over 20 aircraft. U.S. officials have made it clear the campaign is designed to degrade ISIS capabilities and punish those who attack American and allied personnel.

While exact casualty figures from the recent mission are unavailable, the broad scope of the operation shows continued U.S. resolve against the group nearly a decade after its territorial defeat. Syrian authorities also recently said they arrested an ISIS military leader, adding complexity to the anti-ISIS effort.
“We will never relent in denying ISIS a safe haven,” a U.S. defense official said in a brief release.
The strikes matter as ISIS continues insurgent attacks across Syria’s deserts, and U.S. forces remain stationed there alongside shifting regional allies. Analysts say the campaign also underscores the risks U.S. troops face even after the group’s caliphate ended. What happens next could include further air missions or coordinated ground operations with local and partner forces.
Updated Pentagon briefings are expected later this week.
