U.S. Navy Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship With Single Torpedo in Indian Ocean
The United States has confirmed that a U.S. Navy submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean — a strike that immediately escalated tensions in the widening regional conflict.
The vessel, identified as the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, was torpedoed in international waters near Sri Lanka, according to U.S. officials and reporting from Reuters and ABC News. The ship carried roughly 180 personnel.
Sri Lankan authorities launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call. Officials said 32 sailors were rescued from the water while at least 87 bodies were recovered as recovery operations continued.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the attack during a Pentagon briefing, saying the American submarine fired a single torpedo that destroyed the ship. The Defense Department also released periscope-style video it says shows the moment the vessel was hit.
The Iranian warship had recently participated in a multinational naval exercise hosted by India before heading back toward Iran.
According to U.S. officials, the sinking is part of a broader campaign targeting Iranian military assets as hostilities between Iran, the United States, and Israel intensify across the region.
