U.S. Sanctions Iranian Strait Authority as Hormuz Conflict Escalates
The Trump administration imposed new sanctions on Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, accusing the agency of helping Tehran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
The Treasury Department warned that shipping companies, banks, insurers, and other entities cooperating with the authority could also face sanctions. Officials say Iran has attempted to impose transit tolls and maritime controls on vessels moving through the strait.

The move comes during a wider U.S.-Iran confrontation that has disrupted commercial shipping and intensified fears about global oil supply stability. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Treasury officials described the sanctions as part of a broader pressure campaign targeting Iran’s economic and military infrastructure. The dispute has also pulled Gulf states and international shipping operators deeper into the regional crisis.
