U.S. Unseals Warrant as Coast Guard Seizes Venezuelan Oil Tanker Just Before Expiry
A newly unsealed warrant confirms the U.S. government seized the oil tanker M/T Skipper off the coast of Venezuela just before the warrant was set to expire, escalating tensions in an already fraught geopolitical standoff.
The move deepens conflict between Washington and Caracas as the Trump administration intensifies enforcement of sanctions against Venezuelan oil networks and those tied to Iran, raising stakes for maritime trade in the region.
According to Reuters and Axios, the warrant was signed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui on Nov. 26 and authorized U.S. forces to seize the Skipper, a large crude carrier intercepted Dec. 10 in international waters after departing Venezuela with an oil cargo. The tanker had been under U.S. sanctions for its alleged role in transporting sanctioned oil.
The operation was executed by the U.S. Coast Guard under the warrant just before it expired this week, though the affidavit supporting it remains heavily redacted and key documents are still sealed.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated, “The seizure of this vessel highlights our efforts to enforce sanctions and cut off sanctioned oil flows,” affirming U.S. commitment to sanction enforcement.
International response has been swift. Venezuela’s government labeled the seizure an act of “piracy,” condemning it as unlawful appropriation of its assets, and Cuba echoed that stance. Reuters reporting notes the incident has already altered behavior in international shipping, with other tankers rerouting away from Venezuelan destinations amid enforcement fears.
The legality of the action under international law — particularly in waters near Venezuela — remains a point of dispute as full warrant details are not public.
U.S. officials say similar interceptions may be planned as part of broader sanctions enforcement.
Lawmakers and global trading partners are expected to weigh in as diplomatic responses evolve.
