Veteran News Producer Says CBS Told Staff to “Aim Reporting” at Politics Before Her Departure
Veteran CBS News producer Mary Walsh is exiting the broadcast news giant after 46 years, saying internal messaging pushed journalists to target “a particular part of the political spectrum.” According to a farewell memo obtained by The Guardian, Walsh said she didn’t know how to comply with that instruction, framing her departure as a stand for traditional journalism.
CBS leadership pushed back. Evening News executive producer Kim Harvey wrote that Walsh’s claim “is simply not true,” saying the newsroom has never been asked to skew its reporting.
Walsh’s exit adds to a string of high-profile departures and internal friction at CBS since editor-in-chief Bari Weiss took over and Paramount Skydance moved closer to acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery — raising questions about political influence across major U.S. newsrooms.
