Who Controls Your Money? The Treasury’s DOGE Disaster
Elon Musk’s financial operatives infiltrated the government. Now Congress wants answers.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has moved like a wrecking ball through the U.S. Treasury, leaving chaos, resignations, and federal investigations in its wake. What began as a supposed efficiency initiative under the Trump administration has instead become a troubling experiment in unchecked power, culminating in an audit by the Treasury’s Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

How DOGE Took Over the Treasury
January 31, 2025: The storm began with the resignation of David Lebryk, a senior Treasury official who refused to allow DOGE access to the Treasury’s federal payment systems. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wasted no time, granting DOGE access later that same day.
February 2, 2025: Elon Musk, architect of DOGE, bragged on social media that his team was shutting down “illegal payments” made to organizations like Global Refuge, fueling conspiracy theories about misuse of government funds.
February 4, 2025: It was revealed that a DOGE engineer, Marko Elez, had been granted full “read-write” access to the Treasury payment system, despite official claims that DOGE’s role was supposed to be limited to “read-only.” Elez had the ability to alter code in systems that handle $5 trillion in payments annually, including Social Security and government salaries.
February 5, 2025: Facing legal pressure, the Justice Department agreed to temporarily restrict DOGE staff from accessing Treasury payment data. However, key figures, including Tom Krause, DOGE’s financial architect, remained in place.
February 6, 2025: Elez resigned after journalists uncovered racist and eugenicist social media posts, raising further concerns about the vetting process for DOGE personnel.
February 7, 2025: Nineteen Democratic-led states filed a lawsuit to block DOGE from Treasury systems, arguing that the group’s involvement was unconstitutional and threatened financial security. That same day, Tom Krause, that same DOGE strategist, was appointed Fiscal Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, overseeing the same payment systems DOGE sought to disrupt. Krause notably remains the CEO of Cloud Software Group, raising significant conflict-of-interest concerns.
February 8, 2025: A federal judge issued an injunction barring DOGE from further access and ordering the destruction of any data obtained without authorization since January 20.
February 14, 2025: The Treasury’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) announced separate investigations into DOGE’s role at Treasury, its access to sensitive systems, and whether security controls were sufficient. The OIG audit is expected to conclude by August 2025, with interim updates if significant risks are uncovered.
The Krause Factor: DOGE Insider Turned Treasury Official
A key player in this unfolding crisis is Tom Krause, the former DOGE financial strategist who now holds a senior position within the agency he helped infiltrate. On February 7, Krause was appointed Fiscal Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, which puts him in charge of overseeing federal payment systems that disburse trillions in government funds.
However, Krause remains the CEO of Cloud Software Group, a private company that could stand to benefit from inside knowledge of federal financial operations. Ethics watchdogs have sounded the alarm over this blatant conflict of interest, but the Treasury’s ethics office has inexplicably approved the arrangement. This move raises serious questions about whether private interests are being given undue influence over government financial systems.
The Investigations: What’s Next?
Ongoing OIG Audit: The Treasury’s internal watchdog is investigating whether DOGE’s presence compromised the integrity of federal financial systems.
GAO Review: This congressional oversight agency is conducting a broader review, focusing on security vulnerabilities and potential misconduct.
Potential Congressional Hearings: Senator Elizabeth Warren has signaled interest in bringing DOGE’s actions before Congress, increasing pressure on Musk, Krause, and Treasury leadership to explain their actions.
The Bottom Line
This is no longer just about government efficiency if indeed it ever was. It’s about who controls the nation’s money. DOGE stormed into the Treasury, ousted career officials, and left a trail of suspicion and lawsuits in its wake. Now, the question isn’t just whether laws were broken; it’s whether a rogue experiment in privatized governance put America's financial infrastructure at risk.
The investigations are coming, and the country deserves answers.

A bunch of racists in control of the Treasury of the people. Geez, what can go wrong? The fascist autocratic republicans will need to pay a very heavy price for this! All of them will pay. They've already fucked up. And so they must pay. Vote all their asses out, if we still have voting rights by 2026, being how these demons keep destroying everything in their path with lightning speed. 🤬🤬🤬
Investigating? What do you think you will find after months and many dollars, that you will be begging me for, that you don’t already know? Dems’ definition of Investigation: a useful word used to pretend you’re doing something.
