A Colombian man bought a ticket, tried to obey a voluntary-departure order and remained detained because the government blocked the departure it later claimed he had missed.
The article was excellent but did not adequately explain the importance of voluntary departure. Being able to voluntarily depart means the individual can reapply for admission to the United States at any time. Involuntary departure means the individual may face ten years or more of ineligibility for admission, with additional hurdles that an applicant for admission with no record of deportation has. Individuals faced with a deportation order are often advised to voluntarily depart before having to be deported.
Maybe I’m a lame brain but I know for a fact having both gone to school and worked overseas in Switzerland and Italy respectively if I had overstayed my visa nothing but trouble would have come my way. I would imagine that if I had overstayed my visas I would have been in violation of their immigration laws, and being in violation of the law would make me a criminal. I can see the point being made about the Columbian gentleman being incorrectly detained. We have a huge bureaucracy doing a lousy job of assisting those whom agree they are here illegally and do not want to wait an indeterminate time in detention for an immigration hearing to determine the disposition of their case. For those whom wish to voluntarily deport they certainly ought to be helped in that goal. However because of the choices they made which led them to being here illegally they unfortunately have become entangled in a messy system. You will find this “messy system” stuff is endemic to American society whether you go to the DMV or CVS to pick up your scripts using “automated” systems. At the DMV I am told by the employees that the system is slow despite some automation because of understaffing. The understaffing problem likely exists for financial reasons. Similarly at CVS there is also understaffing and again this is due to financial reasons. In this case corporate profit is involved. In the case of the Colombian citizen whom choose to follow the law and self deport but got swallowed in the bureaucracy corporate profit could be involved since these are for profit prisons, but a few such cases here and there while unfortunate do not yet speak to a trend where that would be unfair at best. While I understand the plight of many immigrants my parents both being refugees from Europe during WW Ii, I also remember them and other relatives studying test material to become a US citizen and saw the pride they had for achieving that goal. This sort of stuff ought to be remembered. By the way I might add that I have voted in every national election since I got my draft card and have never voted Republican. I believe what I have laid out above is just common sense.

Airfare to Columbia is not cheap. Does the government also bear the cost of a replacement ticket, now needed due to its own actions? They should.

ICE are a bunch of sadistic bastards. They force immigrants into a corner and then they flip the tables. That is completely unfair!
