A devastating mid-air collision occurred this evening near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, involving an American Eagle regional jet and a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Both aircraft are confirmed to have plunged into the Potomac River, and emergency response teams are currently on-site, racing to locate and assist any survivors.
American Eagle Flight 5342 was on its final approach to the airport after departing from Wichita, Kansas. The collision disrupted all flight operations at Reagan National, with flights being diverted or delayed as the scene remains active.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation to determine what led to this catastrophe. Whether due to mechanical failure, communication breakdown, or other unforeseen circumstances, this tragedy underscores air travel's unpredictable and fragile nature.

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic event.

Let’s call it as it was. The airplane was on final approach to land holding its course. The helicopter made a series of moves changing course and then came about and crashed into the airplane downing it. Facts matter, the aircrew of the airplane didn’t stand a chance to avoid it or mitigate the outcome. Very sad to see it being reported as a “collision” of worst still that the airplane “crashed into” the helicopter. Absolutely tragic incident that was totally avoidable. Utterly devastating for all those who died, their families and the wider community. A very dark day for aviation and for America.
That is tragic.
