As a recreational SCUBA diver in California I often experienced poor visibility when diving 1-2 miles off Southern California beaches. When I went to Catalina Island 26 miles distant my underwater clear vision improved from 8-10 ft to 30-40 ft and the abalone were healthy to eat. Parts of Europe were once covered with forests. I have recently been swimming in the Mediterranean where Rome and Greece are rocky landscapes. The cumulative effect of removal of naturally occurring biologic life has consequences for humans and all life. North of Boston my hometown was once the 5th largest fish producing port in the world (Gloucester). As a teenager my summer job included working on a seine fishing vessel to earn fabulous money for college. Today there is no longer a seine fishing fleet because there are no fish. Algae grows uncontrolled unless healthy water circulates it or animal life destroys it. Many heroic citizen cleanup efforts (Erin Brokovich) have inspired action to assist chemical, algae and bacteria removal. Can anybody imagine the impact of a government that sponsored clean water policy by budgeting for clean water treatment and a healthy environment? A responsible government would demand that all corporations clean up their mess. Until we find another habitable planet I am in favor of saving the earth from overdevelopment, making the air cleaner to breathe, developing policy that rebuilds, conserves and sustains. Trump is not a visionary to establish clean water policy and we are witnessing complete ignorance at the reflecting pool because there is no get rich quick scheme to motivate Trump interest. We can all be embarrassed by the polluted water on July 4th.
