The addictive quality of any form of sugar is astounding. It produces dopamine in the brain. That is so hard to overcome with education about nutrition.

SNAP needs to be run exactly like WIC. Healthy, whole foods, fruits and vegetables, beans, rice, whole wheat bread, no junk food, soda, processed foods, and preservative-laden, high sodium foods. SNAP recipients should also be offered nutrition and cooking classes. Your point is well taken about today's younger generation having no knowledge of food preparation. Why learn to cut up a whole chicken (the least expensive) when you can just heat up frozen chicken nuggets? Today's young people can find almost any nonsense on social media to their detriment, but there are millions of cooking and food preparation videos that could actually prove beneficial to their health and their budget that they wouldn't give the time of day. Municipalities also need to step up and provide free, reliable public transit to a reasonably priced supermarket for their citizens living in food deserts. Instead, they allow the proliferation of convenient and 'dollar' stores where fresh produce, meat and dairy are unavailable. In my Midwest community of 100,000+, there is one entire section of the city that is no longer served by any grocery store or pharmacy. The only chain grocery with a pharmacy closed several months ago due to 'poor performance' at that location. The population of this area tends to be elderly, low-income families, persons lacking transportation, and disabled individuals. The city looked the other way and the building has sat vacant since.

I wish your message would be out there repeatedly. It seems like people need a harsh wake up call to see how they are being played by corporations who tell them we don't care whether you live or die. We just want your money.

I believe any meaningful changes will have to be implemented on a local level. My state and Federal legislators have let their constituents down time and again. It's shameful to me what the current administration has done to prey on the least fortunate with zero understanding of the challenges of poverty, disability, and an already unstable economy. Big Food has big money to buy their way into lobbying and legislation, and even more concerning are the idiots in positions of power making the rules with the guidelines of "I think" and "I feel," rather than scientific data.

Diabetes is not a diet related disease. Diet is one way to treat diabetes. In the 19th Century there was no type 2 diabetes. There was the rare genetic disease we now call type 1 diabetes. But type 2 didn't develop until we replaced horses with automobiles. Since horses are not a turnkey system, the overhead in using a horse for transportation meant that it was faster to walk for shorter trips. So people walked an average of 5 miles per day. Also, there were few desk jobs, and no television. So no type 2 diabetes.

Now, the pharmaceutical industry is trying to profit off of the disease by not addressing the cause, which is our stressful, sedentary lifestyle. It is definitely part of the problem.

Good analysis. Stress causes a long list of medical problems. Among them is that stress controls sugar in our bloodstream. It tells our system, don't metabolize this sugar, because we might need it for flight or fight at any moment.

The work you is crucial. The corporate mess in the industrial sector is evil.

I love this! I hope this isn't too stupid a question, but how can we get started with these steps? They seem overwhelming.

Grow what you can where you are and share with neighbors. Trade if they grow too. It might blow up to serve an entire neighborhood. Start where you are with what you have.

I will have to get some green paint to cover my brown thumb. 😀

If you can't grow, perhaps consider sharing recipes so others know how to use different kinds of produce.

I can do that!
