One corporation buys a smaller one. They strip the company of anything valuable, real estate, pension funds accrued vacation and retirement benefits and then declare bankruptcy. Now we qre being forced to become "private contractors". no benefits, no job security, lower wages.
Several years ago, I took a job with a company that only hired employees through a temp agency. I regretted the decision immediately. But I had a family and really needed the job.
It was torturous back breaking work in a hot, dangerous and harsh industrial environment. After the mandatory 90-day probation period management would not hire on as a regular employee. Their excuse. I called in sick and missed one (1) day of work. I protested. But the alternative was another 30 days probation. Once that passed, they again refused to hire me and give me the customary raise that is offered at the end of the 90-day period. Why? Same excuse as before. So, they said they would tack on another 30-day probation period. And at the end of this extended probation, I would receive my raise. I quit on the spot and walked out.
And just when you think it couldn't get any worse...
Went ahead and filed for unemployment benefits. Only to find that I was neither an employee of the temp agency or the employer! Which as it turns out alleviates both companies from paying into the unemployment insurance fund!!! So, whether you've been laid off, get fired or quit the job you get absolutely squat nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. UGH!!
Happily, after a week I found a good paying less stressful job with a great company.
Thank you for bringing this up. Didn’t know about it. From personal experience as both an employee and an independent contractor experience shows both have their benefits and drawbacks. The main thing I see is yet another opportunity for corporate to rip off not only consumers but providers. Trump promulgates this big money grab and sets the example for worker abuses, corporate grift, and an insatiable appetite for profit at any cost.
I've worked 'Contract Labor' Jobs, otherwise known as Temporary Employment Jobs.
When you need Assistance for food or utility assistance, Even if you are working a full 40 hour week AND have been with any company for several years, it is NOT sufficient for many assistance agencies, because you aren't a 'Permanent' Employee and are still forced to look for a more permanent job, in a market that those are in sharp decline.
Especially, in right to work states, like where I live at, in Central Florida.
I've had so many times where I was on the edge, laid off of a temp position, not able to get assistant to tide me over for a month of two, while waiting to get rehired back at the same place, because they had to get rid of their temps (so that they could do permanent staff reductions) and then rehire us in a few months.
Once, having to change agencies to just get rehired back to work at the same place that I was at before.
Labor will need to be turned into indentured servitude under the "freedom cities" concept that the Muskrat and Lyin' King have proposed. Welcome to the new feudal system.
This is one of the things Amazon does. They have a lot of people who work at Amazon, delivering orders for one, but they don’t work *for* Amazon. There is a difference, especially when it comes to benefits and perks. It is not right!
Remember Gandhi:
"Even the most powerful cannot rule without the cooperation of the ruled."

Sounds too close for comfort.

And Trying to finish up my degree....
How much longer are people going to put up with this?
Or don't people realize or understand it?

Yeah and wait until we get our jobs taken by a computer program then corporate will have us in the palm of their hands begging for work.
