Trump Doesn’t Know What Juneteenth or the Civil War Is

Juneteenth is about truth finally reaching the people. Trump and MAGA are still doing everything they can to bury it.

On June 19th, we honor the day freedom finally reached Galveston, Texas. And this year, we got a stark reminder of why that history still matters.

Donald Trump, sitting in the Oval Office, looked up at a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence and blurted out:

“You see the Declaration of Independence and you say, I wonder if the Civil War… maybe that could have been solved without losing 600,000 plus people.”

It’s hard to tell what’s more embarrassing — the fact that he confused the Revolutionary War with the Civil War, or the fact that this keeps happening. But it’s not just a gaffe. It’s a symptom of something bigger. Something intentional.

Because while we celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday marking the moment freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in the U.S. — MAGA is actively trying to erase that history.

They don’t want you to know the Civil War was fought over slavery.
They don’t want you to know it took two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation for freedom to reach Galveston.
And they definitely don’t want you reading the 13th Amendment too closely — especially the part where slavery is still allowed as punishment for a crime.

Trump’s confusion is their cover. If they can turn our founding documents into alphabet soup, they get to rewrite the story from scratch — one where Lincoln was a tyrant, the South was the victim, and Juneteenth never happened.

But here’s the truth:

  • The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.

  • The Civil War began in 1861.

  • The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863.

  • The people of Galveston, Texas weren’t told they were free until June 19, 1865.

  • And the 13th Amendment didn’t officially abolish slavery until December 1865 — with a loophole we’re still dealing with.

So no, Mr. Trump, the Civil War couldn’t have been solved with a nice chat over the Declaration. And no, MAGA doesn’t get to decide which parts of history we’re allowed to remember.

Juneteenth is a celebration of truth finally breaking through — even when it’s inconvenient. Especially when it’s inconvenient. That’s why we mark it. That’s why we teach it. And that’s why we fight like hell to make sure nobody ever buries it again.
